I've been painting again, something I haven't done for over 10 years. From the time I was 10 years old until I went to seminary I did some form of art daily. Even when the children were small I managed to find time daily for something creative. Creating art was as important as breathing -- I couldn't go long without it. So why haven't I done anything for so long?
Because I've allowed myself to fill my time with too much stuff that really doesn't make my heart sing. First, let me be clear this has nothing to do with my ministry or my love of what I do for my family and the church. This has to do with what I do with my time outside of the church callings. What we all refer to as "spare time" -- which as we all know is a catch phrase because there is no "spare time".
We choose what to do with our time no matter what our calling in life. We choose how to spend our time and whether to create a balance between work, family, friendships, and activities. Yes, some things demand our attention -- but let's get real. We do have more "spare time" than we are willing to admit. How much time is spent in front of the TV? How much time is spent on the internet or computer? How much time is spent doing things that really aren't going to enhance or better our lives or those around us?
Now that I have started painting again, I feel better about myself and what I'm doing with my "spare time". What are you doing that's keeping your soul from singing again? What's eating up your "spare time" that really isn't working for you?
What gives you joy? What makes your heart sing? What have you put away on a shelf or in a drawer that you might want to dust off and revive?
