At first it was an inconvenience, then suddenly it became a blessing. Of course I am referring to the time I spent without power recently. The storms came quickly, in the darkness of night. As the first rays of sunlight peeked from behind the shroud of night I discovered the landscape of my yard was forever changed. Four of the most magnificent trees that blessed me each year with abundant shade, striking fall color and interesting contrast to the white snows of winter were gone.
I stood amid the leaves and shattered branches realizing that for me it was sad, but for the birds, squirrels and other creatures it was catastrophic. Their homes were gone, mates and offspring were missing, but there would be no community search and rescue. Then as quickly as the storm had come I observed a pair of Cardinal picking up twigs and grass. They were rebuilding, starting over and by their behavior they were as joyful and dedicated to their task as they were when I observed them in early spring.
The blessing I received was seeing how God provides for the birds as surely as God provides for me the opportunities for new beginnings: sometimes, slowly with plenty of preparation and sometimes very suddenly like a storm. The challenge comes in how I choose to receive the opportunity. I hope that I am like the pair of Cardinals and able to find joy in the struggles and storms of life.
